As if it was that simple... the whole humanity would be enjoying life if the control was in ones hands! Not even 1% amongst the whole community takes charge of life and manifests destiny. What of those... the commoners who simply pass life! Even God Almighty did not destine life that way... A long cosmic journey of 1.1 million manifestations in the human form alone speaks for itself (an earthly abode of 12.1 million years) before one gains enlightenment (kaivalya jnana) and finally salvation (moksha)!
The complete crux of life in the cosmic domain is governed by the doctrine of karma. As we sow so shall we reap... nothing more or less! Following the path of wanton desires and materialistic riches... one cannot expect gaining enlightenment and salvation. If we desire happiness... we need to work for it in the present life. What if we have an accumulated negative balance of karma of the previous manifestations that fructifies in this life?
Most human beings get bogged down in life when they face unexpected negative effects of karma they never performed in this life. We do not want to digest the fact that our body is simply a garment for the soul atman within. It is our soul atman that has manifested the body and not vice versa. The residual balance of karma of one life keeps transferring to the future manifestations. In the residual balance of karma of the previous manifestations is positive... we have nothing to worry! What if the balance is negative!
As per the doctrine of karma it is in our interest to keep on accumulating Punya karma by performing good deeds in present life. Only then the negative residual balance of karma of previous manifestations can be neutralized! True happiness comes from within... when our soul atman rejoices in glory of the positive karma performed by the body... the human being! It is a trait of character that can be developed by practicing patience, persistence and perseverance.
All those who live a truthful life... keeping the interests of the community above self... remain happy! Happiness is never permanent. We also have sorrows at times! Both happiness and sorrow are two sides of the same coin. Why not follow a goal of life dear to our heart. It is only when we lose sense of time... the inner happiness surfaces! Because if you did that you might be happy for a while, but eventually your going to run out of money and lose everything you have. The light bill will still come due and the cable etc. We all have responsibilities, but that doesn't mean we don't enjoy life or are unhappy. It's human nature to always want more. Even if you didn't worry about the future or your duties and it worked, you would just get tired and unhappy with that lifestyle too. Human nature.

OK, so I'm out there enjoying life, say for example I'm enjoying life by cooking an omelet (on an electric cooker) and all of a sudden the electricity goes off, why? Because I was to busy enjoying life to think about the future or plan ahead and pay the bill. To fully enjoy your life and be happy you have to think about the past, and about planning for the future. It's amazing how trivial things like not paying the electricity bill can effect our happiness, there are other things that it effects as well as my omelet, the fridge will go off (now I have to worry about the food in it going off), the freezer will go off (now I have to worry about the stuff defrosting), I won't be able to watch something on television, I won't be able to use the computer or the internet, all the lights will go off (meaning I have to worry about finding alternative light sources, and if I use candles about the risk of fire). This just reinforces my earlier point, to be happy you have to think about a lot more than just the present.

For me, at least, I think a lot because I want to have "genuine happiness." Too many people build their lives and their happiness up on things that can easily fall apart instead of finding a happiness within themselves that can never be taken away. The purpose of my thinking is to sift through all of the junk that has been pushed upon me in my life so that I can get down to my most basic aspects/desires/needs.
And of course, for many others, happiness is not the greatest virtue. Duty and the search for meaning often come first so that people feel they have a purpose, even if there isn't one.

Unhappiness, worry, frustration, resentment and other human mental attribute of this kind are caused by reflective thoughts in the mind. This ability is only peculiar in human nature, without which human mind would not have evolved into the form it is now. I therefore take your question as a form of positive thinking to counter balance tendencies, also natural to human mind, for exaggeration and overuse of all the traits especially the ones I mentioned in the beginning.
My personal approach on the subject is that things in general nature are in peace and harmony with themselves. A flower for example has no resentments, no complaints and no qualms about the environment it grows in; the only thing it requires of is a chance to grown. And when a flower if cut it does not waste its energy in deliberation, reflection or emotions like human beings. It simply keep growing and fulfilling its purpose of being. But again does a flower know that it is flower, and that it is beautiful in the eyes of many?

What about when your happiness is at the cost of others? Choices have consequences, both now and often in the future. If one shirks thinking about the effect their actions may have, then they have attempted to make choices in a vacuum, free from responsibility. If one is worried only about present happiness, there is a huge opportunity for the choices made today to have enormously negative consequences in the future.

Happiness is a result of having control over your current situation, thus having no worries. When we have no control, we have to resolve the worries in order to be happy. Some people are naturally worrisome about things, so they need almost a superhuman control over their life to be happy. Some try to physically resolve problems, some stress over them, some believe that knowlage will allow them to find the root of their problems, and easily control them. So, the reason some people can't be happy is they have different ways of trying to be happy, and sometimes it could be the wrong way.

Yep I totally agree and I really do try and today has been pretty good, but when you wake up really happy and then some t*sser is in a bad mood and moans on at you it's really hard to stay in a good mood and that makes me angry. It's very selfish of moody people to put happy people on a downer, I think if you wake up in a mood you should stay indoors till it's gone.
