I was 22 years old and newly married. My husband worked away from home during the week from Monday to Thursday. It was about 3 AM on a Thursday morning and I was awakened by someone making noise outside of our home. When I was fully alert, I realized the noise had been someone breaking in the front door. It was too late for me to reach for the phone or to do anything else....so I froze and prayed. I heard him in the hall and felt him as he leaned on the bed to see if I was asleep or awake. I heard him digging in my purse and through my things. I heard him in the hallway as he went into the bathroom to dig for prescription drugs. He got a few dollars in cash from my purse and nothing else from the home. I heard him close the door and I laid there with tears running down my face for about ten minutes just to be sure he was gone. Then, I jumped up and called 911 and some friends of mine who happened to be on the force came to help me. The door was messed up and stuff was all over the place. He had broken into three other houses that night. About a week later, he actually beat up a woman who woke up and confronted him. It took me a long time to feel safe again. I learned to use a gun, but I could never bring myself to think that was the answer. I have since moved and have a safer home where it would be much more difficult to break into...but some times I still have nightmares about that person leaning on the bed and what would have happened if I had not been calm and just kept praying in my head to keep myself from freaking out.

You're a smart girl. Your wits saved you.
I'm naturally afraid of heights (because of my childhood trauma), and the scariest was when I went up to a diving platform that is about 23 feet high (about 7 years ago). I just wanted to test my guts, but I was scared as hell - I almost fainted - but I did it. Since then I was able to at least overcome my fear. I still have the fear of heights, but I could handle it better now.
