Cast iron is great for cooking, indoors or out. If you need to reseason a pot/skillet try this:
° Fill with a solution of hot water, some degreasing dish detergent (like Dawn), and baking soda. Let sit for 30 minutes.
° Scrub with a scouring pad, removing all of the blackened patina.
° Rinse well
° Dry well with a cloth/paper towels
° Put on stove top and heat for 3-5 minutes over low flame, just to finish the drying process.
° Let cool
Now, you have to reseason the pan, restoring the patina and preventing rust:
° Lightly coat with VEGETABLE SHORTENING, inside and out.
° Place in a 300°F oven for 30 minutes
° Let cool, wipe off excess shortening with paper towels
When you store it, put a dry paper towel inside to protect the seasoning from any other pots you might nest together.
After each use, wash quickly with a slightly soapy rag, then dry well and lightly coat with vegetable shortening. (You don't have to put it in the oven again.) Wipe out leftover shortening.
Don't use oil because it can become rancid.

My husband is an expert on cast iron, and I learned this from him. After use, run hot water over the item and scrub it out with a dish brush. Rinse thoroughly to get rid of all food particles. Fill the pan 1/2 with water and put back on the stove. Turn the burner on to high or medium high and let it boil for a bit (don't let it boil out though). After it has boiled, pour out the water and dry it with a cloth or paper towel. Cast iron needs to be "cured" occasionally, as well. When the metal begins to look "dried out" or if there are "rusty" looking spots, use a small bit of cooking oil on a paper towel and rub the metal.

wash it with kerosene, cook it in an open fire, burn it off, then hang it outside and let it rust, then clean the rust off.
