Well I live in California and I believe that immigration is a big concern. I keep on getting a bunch of spam in my e-mail about locking down the borders but seems like it may be irrational. so throughout the history of man i imagined this has been a concern before.
What has been tried in what countries and what happend.
Successes and failures, both I would like to review.

Berlin Wall worked well for a while. So did the combination of moat and drawbridge.
Desperate people will resort to desperate measures. Kinda what I learned in high school: first instinct is self-preservation.

One thing that people should consider is that small scale immigration is a whole different thing that the large scale immigration that the USA and to a degree the UK is facing.

I dont know of any countries in recent history, or even not so recent history that have faced the sheer volume of immigration the USA is facing right now.

During the huge immigration from europe to the USA around the turn of the century from 1900 to 1910 the USA had a huge 9 million immigrants. It was alot more than I think people expected.
However 9 million in 10 years or 900k a year average is only a fraction of what we get now.

3-4 million a year now with legal and illegal immigrants.

Immigration Control as you put it is not needed, its absolutely nescessary to prevent the USA from collapsing economically.
It doesnt matter what your feelins are about it, the USA cannot economically handle the amount of immigrants we are getting. Thats just a fact.

There have been large one time immigrations like that short period mentioned from europse, and of course ramping up to the state of Israel and some other instances.

But no one could handle this volume of immigration on a sustained basis like is happening.
