The Rolling Stones, as well as all rock artists of the 60s, developed their sound from blues and 1950s rock & roll that was developed by African-Americans. The music and culture from which the blues grew existed as a direct result of racism and discrimination as a result of the growth of the country beginning with the Reconstruction Era and going up into the Civil Rights Movement. Arguably, the music of African-Americans during the 1930s, 40s, and 50s that grew into rock and roll would not have developed the way it did if not for the slavery that gave birth to black culture in America in the first place. That said, the Rolling Stones likely would have grew up in the same environment they did, regardless, and may have been drawn to music regardless. The sound may have been different, but the Rolling Stones still could have come together, slavery or not. It is impossible to say for sure.

They may not have if you are thinking what I am thinking. African slaves brought music to America that influenced what eventually became the blues then rock-n-roll. This music influenced bands in England and thus The Stones. Slavery is still bad though. Sounds obvious but I thought I'd throw that in.

Yes, they might not have been as popular though had they not ripped off American blues artists. I heard once that Chuck Berry punched Keith Richards in the mouth for stealing music.

I would say that the Stones, Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton, etc, would not be who they are today without the influence they found in the American south...Most excellent question...I like your brain, you remind me of me ;)

No way. Without slavery there'd be no Blues (as we know it). Without the Blues, they would have had only Skiffle as inspiration. Yuck!
