The Internet is "world wide" and open to the public
The Intranet is a local, private network such as with in a single company, or even the two computers you have networked together at home.

Usually an Intranet will also offer access to the Internet. But you can not get to an Intranet from the Internet without passwords, etc.

The Internet is public and accessable by all, at least in principle.

An intranet is a closed or private network. It can be unique to an organization or some sort of group. Access is restricted.

An intranet can use the internet as the pipeline to get in but it will require some sort of validation to permit entry to the closed system.

Many companies have an Intranet. In it are company policies, health insurance forms, health claim forms, and other materials that employees need to access but the general public does not.

Some public web sites also have a restricted area requiring validation to enter. This part of the site could be considered an intranet.
