write it out plus the chord changes etc post it to yourself with a proof of postage then when you receive it the post deposit into a bank or solicitors safe with a dated receipt

There is only one way to legally copyright a song...through the Library of Congress in Washington. They charge $35 to file electronically and $45 to file via paper application.

That said, you have the option to copyright one song for that price, or copyright several songs as a body of work for that price.

There used to be something called a poor man's copyright whereby you would mail a copy of the work to yourself, but that never holds up when challenged in court and you risk losing your work.

Seal it in an envelope and mail it to yourself. Dont open the letter when you get it. It will be postmarked proving when you wrote it.
