I put on about 20lbs too, and until I started working out I didn't shed it. I've replaced my cravings with gum and its worked for 6 months so far. Good luck

I've never been quit long enough for there to make a difference, but my daughter quit for 2 months last year. She's 5'6", at a healthy weight, and did gain 5 pounds after she quit. Her dresses and blouses still fit, but the jeans were just a bit tight. It was on our list, for one of her weekends home, to get some more jeans. But she started again after school restarted, she lost the 5 pounds back, so that was that.
A little weight gain is going to happen for most when they quit smoking, since smoking boosts the metabolism a bit, and for many, is an appetite suppresant. I guess you should ask which you want more; to be a smoker, or to be a few pounds heavier.

Sounds like you are replacing the nicotine with food, which is really common. I put on 5 pounds the first month then I realized that I was eating every time I wanted a smoke.. Try replacing the habit with sugar-free gum, or take a walk, hike or lift weights.

weight gain is a typical side effect for those who finally quit smoking. The reason being, they replace the hand to mouth habit with food instead of cigarettes. Get yourself some sugarless candies, chewing gum, keep raw vegetables handy, so you are putting things in your mouth that will not cause weight gain. Start exercising more, it's easier now that you are not smoking, and the weight should come off or at least stop increasing.

Ride a bike. When you're pedaling up steep hills at a good pace you will realize how much your body needs oxygen, and why you wouldn't be able to do that while puffing a cigarette. Biking is a great way to get fit, gain muscle, and lose body fat.
Congratulation on being smoke free.
Good luck
