Stereotypes are actually generalizations that have evolved down through the years. Allow me to present a few which should not evoke an emotional reaction.

Generally speaking, people who lose 5 pints of blood in a hour, die .

Generally speaking, cats meow and dogs bark.

People with stomach ulcers don't normally eat spicy foods.

Typically, babies born with Down's Syndrome don't do well on intelligence tests.

Now here come some genralizations that may evoke more of an emotional reaction.

Typically, fundamental evangelicals in the United States do not approve of the stereotypical "gay" man or woman.

People who have no education generally can't get a good job and typically commit more crime.

So I don't know what you mean by taken seriously. Do people believe seriously in stereotypes. Yes, I think they do. We base stereotyping on our own experiences. Unfortunately, our own experiences might be limiting and shed a very slanted view of things.

No, not if you mean they should be believed, because stereotypes are just that- stereotypes. They are not fact.

If you mean that they should be taken seriously in so much as that stereotyping leads to discrimination, then yes we should be aware of this and help to make others aware.

Stereotypes are used to divide people and put them against each other. There just another link in the Downfall of what most people perceive to be civilization. Stereotypes should all be ignored and forgotten so that people can see others for who they really are not for what people believe that they might be. There should be no exceptions.

There is truth to some stereotypes. It is harmful only when it's taken to extreme. Not all stereotypes should be taken seriously.
