The name V-chip is widely believed to come from the word "violence," but an interview with Tim Collings, who developed the technology, reveals that it was intended to stand for "viewer control."
Q: Right off the top - what does the 'V' in V-chip really stand for?
A: Well, some say the 'V' stands for 'violence,' others say 'vulgarity'. I intended it to stand for 'viewer control,' but it also stands for 'Vancouver' and I hope it comes to stand for 'values.'

In ancient times it used to mean strength and determination.
