I have a queen size mattress on my chestbed. I don't have a boxspring as I figure the firm top surface of the chestbed makes this obsolete...and, that it would probably cause me to use a ladder to climb into bed each night. My question is this: I was told I need a "special" mattress designed to sit on top of a wooden chestbed. I've searched around and have never heard of such a thing -- has anyone out there?

You don't need a special mattress. I think what your talking about is a special 'box spring' that is commonly referred to as a "Bunkie Board". They are used on Bunk Beds in place of a standard Box Spring. The bunkie board is about 2 inches thick and sits between your mattress and the chest. It does absolutely nothing in the way of support or comfort on a Captain's bed (or chest bed). The other thing you might be thinking of is what is called a "no-flip mattress" or "one-sided". One side is a normal mattress, the other side is rigid.
If you are happy with the comfort of your current mattress, don't change it. You are not doing any damage to it as long as the entire underside of it is being supported by the chest.
The most important thing is that you are comfortable and sleep well. You don't have to take anyone else's advise, unless they are sleeping in it, too. Sleep well!

I think what you're talking about is commonly known as a captains bed? A bed with drawers underneath. Normally you don't need a special mattress for these but if you prefer a softer bed, you may want to either invest in a deeper mattress or a memory foam topper to put on top of it. (I have the memory foam and it's amazing how it improves the comfort of any bed.)

You'll also probably want to put a rug pad, which is used to keep the rug from sliding around the floor, between the bed and the mattress to keep it from sliding around. Rug pads are cheap and can be cut to size and you can get them at any home store like Bed Bath and Beyond, etc.
