like any other area of study, science and maths give the person who knows them advantages in the real world.

naturally, the person who doesn't know them then is at a disadvantage.

For example, it is quite common here in the United States for fast-talking life insurance and/or mutual fund salesmen to show a prospect a wonderful table illustrating that if s/he follows their investment plan, they'll accumulate one million dollars by age 67.

However, they omit to mention that their figures are prepared before considering inflation and that the one million dollars, when it is achieved, will spend more like 110,000 dollars today -- and will be far too small to support a husband and wife for their remaining joint life expectancy of 28 years.

Btw, "joint life expectancy" is another such load of nonsense -- no couple lives exactly the JLE. What JLE actually means is that:

a) IF there are no further medical advances during the 28 years, AND

b) IF other conditions continue as they are now [no vast wars, etc.],

THEN, there is a 50% chance that at least one of the couple will live for more than 28 years.

So, if they've been drawing out 4k a year plus inflationary growth each year, there is a 50% chance that at least one will survive beyond age 95 AND will then be desperately poor (because their accumulated nest egg will have been completely spent).

If you do not completely understand the discussion above, I recommend that you study some more science and maths.

:-)
