been there, done that.
your welcome.
I don't think that conservative/liberal makes a difference in serving in the military. Some people just need to serve their country through the military. Some people don't. What bugs me is those that didn't serve (and thus know NOTHING about how it really works) yet have all this 'insight' into how the military should do things.
thank you for serving too.
peace

If more personnel had been needed to fight the war in Afghanistan, I would have joined if age were not a factor (I'm 45). In the case of Afghanistan, people who had plotted an attack against us and were planning more were using that country as a haven, training, and staging area.
I would not join if needed to continue the operations in Iraq, because until we invaded, Iraq was no threat to the US or our interests and had no ties to the attacks.
In general, I would join if needed to defend the United States from a legitimate threat. But not to defend some politicians ideology or to give the US an opportunity to test out the Secretary of Defense's radical new war strategy.
And, sorry to jump the question, but I'm not a veteran. I have worked as a defense contractor. I did consider joining when I was 18 (the Navy and the Air Force both invited me), but that was a long time ago, and the US wasn't at war with anyone at the time.
And finally:
"What bugs me is those that didn't serve (and thus know NOTHING about how it really works) yet have all this 'insight' into how the military should do things."
You mean like George Bush, Dick Cheney, Karl Rove, and Donald Rumsfeld?

First, there would have to be a very good reason to start a war. Bush scrambled intelligence so he could have his war in Iraq. The Iraqi's did not start 9/11 Bin laden did! Bush could care less about Bin laden.
War should not be taken lightly, because our young and finest, bravest, smartest people go to war. Their lives are precious and should not be thrown to the wind on some personal vendetta, or special interest of a political party.
I am a moderate Democrat. My adopted son went to Afghanistan and Iraq. I also send packages as an angel to a soldier in Iraq.
Even conservative Republicans are questioning this war.
There are spectrums of every party...from black to gray to white. We are dealing with a neo conservative party that all have greasy hands and want to take over the middle east.
There is a contest with the greatest oil sucking countries...China, Russia, and the USA. A Democrat would not want war, but alternative fuel-to be independant of the middle east....dry up the money then you dry up the terrorist!

team Sergeant -- please do your self a desire and view some history concerning the rustic you have fought for. The Empire of Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941. The President at that ingredient became Franklin D. Roosevelt, arguably between the main liberal presidents we've ever had, and a fairly respected one at that (look at one in each of your dimes). At that ingredient in time, FDR had already been helping England interior the conflict against Hitler for terribly very nearly 2 years with the Lend-hire Act and extra than a number of alternative different measures. So yeah, Liberals would "if some thing like what became occurring in WW2 would they lower back a conflict to end it". in actuality, Liberals led the attempt. His successor, Harry Truman -- additionally a Democrat and a Liberal, stood as much as the North Koreans in 1950. John F. Kennedy, yet another Democrat and Liberal, stood as much as the Soviets over the Cuban Missiles in 1962. specific, Liberals would combat for their united states of america - merely as you will. we are no much less patriotic, and no much less waiting to combat than you're. Please open your eyes and comprehend that Liberals at the instant are not your mortal enemy. we are all individuals and we ought to be and stay united against all comers. that all and sundry pronounced, thank you on your sacrifice and your provider. If it have been as much as me, you does no longer have been injured this style in a conflict for Mr. Bush's and Mr. Cheney's wallets.

Seems to me I see a lot of guys driving around with bumper sticker with "send the protesters to Iraq" and so on on their vehicles.
The question in my mind is , why arent these guys in Iraq if they're so effing gung ho?
Just like bush and cheney, it's always the ones who have never fought a war that are all hot to send others to die.
Critical thought, and common sense are dead in America, drowned out by the screaming and name calling that passes for political discourse in a country founded upon rational debate and compromise.

I'm not a liberal, but what it'd take for me is:
1) Raise the age requirements enough to let me in,
2) Similarly, lower the fitness requirements
3) actually _Declare_ a war.

A friend of mine , who passed away 5 years ago at the age of 86, was a gunnery sgt in USMC. He was captured by the Japanese at Corrigador, and was in the Bataan death march. He was taken to Tokyo, and used as a slave in their factories. He was in the Army, 4 years prior to that. He personally met Chesty Puller. He was also a life long Democrat, and hated poiticians. And you, you're what's known as a phukken ashwhole.

I'd fight for my country if there were a way to direct where I could fight. I'd be happy to waste some Taliban or Janjaweed. the trouble is, I'd probably be court martialed for being too trigger happy and not giving the little dears their "rights". Give me a M60 and I'll show you some dead Taliban!
