Hi there. I bought the Toshiba laptop so that I could work and be entertained as I travel and work around the world regularly. However, my DVD drive is locked, so I can only watch UK DVDs!

I fail to see the sense in a flippin PORTABLE computer having a region lock.

Anyway, I've googled the problem but can't find a solution. I know firmware updates/hacks are illegal and I'm not saying I'd use one, but I would like to know all relevant info available so that I can make an informed decision.

If the only solution is to buy another external DVD drive, please recommend a reasonably priced one.

Thanks guys.

Thanks to those who have recommended 'dvd region free +CSS' but unfortunately his does not work with the Mashita uj-841s drive.

Anyone?!

Well, it just figures you'd have that Matshita drive. Here's another program that allows you to watch any region DVDs, but it also doesn't work with the Matshita XX-8XX drives-
looks like replacing that drive would make life good.

Contact Toshiba and see if any other brands/models of DVD drives are available for your laptop, perhaps? My guess is there probably aren't any, and you'll have to go with an external DVD-ROM drive.

Well, it's not up to the computer maker- all DVD drives which are manufactured- whether standalone for TV, for computers, portable, home theatre etc must have region lock. Governments in many countries have bowed to the will of the recording industry on this count.

There is software to circumvent this, although it doesn't work on all DVD drives.

Apparently you can still download DVD Region +CSS Free from some sources, just not anywhere in the EU.

specific they do exist. maximum would properly be performed in 2 or 3 areas (I certainly have some that are for area 2 + 4) There are some that are area 0 that are multi regonal and could be performed in any DVD participant.
