Eventually, probably, humans will be a thing of the past but the planet won't be doomed -- it will go on without us.

If anything, we will kill ourselves through nuclear war. Check out a thing called the Doomsday Clock. It shows how close we are to eliminating the human race. I would say in not too long, there will also be a major disease that will wipe out billions, such as the chicken flu. It's bound to happen, especially with the population growth the Earth has right now. Either disease or nuclear war will wipe us out long before an asteroid or global warming or anything.
I doubt we will find anywhere else to go. The only planet or object that has any potential whatsoever right now is Mars, and we are a long way from even getting close to putting people there. The United States is far to interested in spending our money on the military than anything else. We haven't even been to the moon in about 40 years, and the distance to the moon is nothing compared to the distance to Mars.

all things that are of manifested material will one day be no more. in time everything must and will change. man in the splendor and grandeur of his folly has destroyed everything on this planet. actually at the present the earth is responding to the madness that has wounded her. if you were given a paradise to live in and you were given authority to be keeper of this paradise and you begin to kill everything that is natural within it and replace it with harmful substances, what do you think would be the result of these endeavors???? finite man will become a thing of the past because of his resistence to become a part of his environment. he wanted to rule the environment, now look at the results. the finite man is a man who has prostituted the wisdom of the Most High, corrupted the knowledge, and is destroying many cultures as we speak. (666) all the way across the board dude, incomplete god, imperfect science, and a destructive nature. this is the way of humanity at present. there will be a few that will survive the horror that is right around the corner, and they will be the ones who will build from the ashes and keep humanity going forward to it's final destiny.

I think there are many threats to survival of humankind; some of which we can and should devote energy to preventing, or at least stop causing. We have used science and technology to save people's lives that would have been given up for dead just a few years ago. We should also use it to research methods for saving our climate, and preventing large comets and asteroids from hitting our planet.
Of course there are things that we cannot avoid, and if some unavoidable catastrophe destroys us all, of course, the defense of "Nature doesn't care" is reasonable, but if we are wiped out by nuclear war or global warming due to Carbon Dioxide emissions, that is called suicide. If we're knocked out by a rock from space that we would have been able to push away, that is called negligence.
I think as a race we should do whatever we can to survive, and even if we fail, we will have given it our best shot.

Humans will survive for thousands of years at least. There is just no way that anything short of an all out nuclear war will have any chance of causing humans to go extinct.

I don't think that the planet is doomed.
However, I do think that global warming will drastically effect where people can live, and food production.
If the worse-case scenarios materialize, with a 6 meter rise in ocean levels, I could see a billion deaths.
This would not be from thirst. This would be war, as desperate people try to move and others try to stop them.

50 years may be too short and I won't go with such alarmist predictions. But if not 50 years, may be after 50 million years, some day in future, earth may stop being a habitable planet.
