UIC is not an engineering school (Main campus in Urbana is one of the best in the country). University of Illinois Chicago has a focus geared towards medicine, health sciences, and general studies that you would expect in an urban campus that appeals to commuter students. They at least have dedicated Chem Eng facilities, but a skeleton faculty. Seems to be heavily oriented towards grad students... which tends to be the case with science studies at UIC. The campus is right in the middle of downtown Chicago, so it is a pretty nice location if you need to work AND go to school, or will not have a car with you.

Illinois' engineering program (Main Campus - UIUC) is notorious for being difficult to get into. Good news for you... Chem E is in the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Might be a good idea. If you are looking at an Illinois Chem E program, you might as well go with the Big Ten program that consistantly ranks in the top of the country.

Looking at UND, I'm not sure if I would go there either. The school maxes out at a Masters degree for Chem Eng. I would try for a school that offers a Ph.D - mainly because it would have the right facilities for the study of this.

Other Midwestern State schools you might want to consider are Iowa State, Missouri - Rolla, Michigan State, and Purdue. Wisconsin has a good program too, but once again, very selective.

Something you may not be considering is how the schools balance when considering future oppotunities.

Which one works with top companies? Which one offers the best internships so that you can guarantee a spot after college?

Also, factor in the backgrounds and experiences of the professor in the field at both schools.

I'm a Public Policy major but I think these are all important questions to consider with any school.

UIC's engineering program is very solid. The fact is that it gets over shadowed by Urbana. People have heard of UIC. Very few have heard of UND. If you are an Illinois resident, go to UIC.
