Great question....as a matter of fact, when I was in the 6th grade in Bessemer, AL - I won the Spelling Bee contest for our school and went on to Birmingham to compete with other elementary schools. I got as far as state competition. Today, I am an English teacher and I love spelling. Sometimes I can see a word and know that it is incorrectly spelled. I have always loved spelling and it really gets to me when my students who readily admit they are not good spellers, will not use a dictionary to check their spelling when they write papers. (smile)

I was in the spelling bee at my school in 6th 7th and 8th grade and I won when I was in 7th and 8th but in 6th I misspelled the word griddle I accidentally spelled it grittle [which isn't even a word]without thinking

I thought I could spell....until I watched those kids in 8th grade on the Scripps National Spelling Bee..
OH MY GOD...some of those words I couldn't even PRONOUNCE let alone spell!!!!!!

i won some back in grade school. I'm pretty good at language type "studies"--humanities, etc. But math and science were definitely not something i excelled in, except for 10th grade biology. :))
