Have you ever eaten corn on the cob? That is exactly what popcorn looks like! It is just a different variety of corn! The plant looks exactly like any other corn plant.

Popcorn takes longer to grow because it has to mature completely and dry out to the hardness you see when you open the package of popcorn from the store!

Go to this link to see popcorn being harvested from a popcorn field. You can see that it is harvested the same way other dry corn crops are harvested for cornmeal, seed or for turning into cornmeal or for turning into corn syrup or ethanol or biodiesel or animal feed.

The corn that you eat from a package of frozen corn or canned corn or fresh corn on the cob is harvested while it is still tender, way before it dries out like your popcorn.

Here is a really cool photo of sweet corn being harvested:

The dry corn and sweet corn are harvested differently.

Dry corn and popcorn harvesters actually remove the corn seed from the cob.

Sweet corn harvesters do not. They are actually just corn pickers. They pick the cobs off the corn plants while the plants are still green. Then they put all those corn cobs with the corn still on them into trucks as you can see in the moonlight picture. The trucks take the cobs with the corn still on them to a processing plant where they remove the green husks and the silk, then remove the corn off the cob. The sweet corn is then either canned or frozen.

Back now to your popcorn.

Would you like to grow some popcorn of your own? If you have a good garden spot and you live in the southern part of the country, it is still not too late to plant popcorn!

Are you wondering where to buy the seed to grow popcorn?

Answer: At the grocery store! Just buy a package of popcorn! That is what you plant! Don't try to plant microwave popcorn. It has been processed a bit, I don't know what all they do to it, but if you want to grow popcorn, get a package of just plain popcorn without additives. It will grow if you plant it in good soil and water it regularly. It takes a very long season to grow it and have it mature, so if you live way up north, it may not have time to mature.

Let the plant completely dry up and allow the kernals to get completely mature and dry. You will have your own popcorn!

I hope this answers your question!

Pop Corn is its own seed, plant some and it will grow ears of corn just like regular corn, shell it off and pop it.

Pop corn is a special variety of corn that grows like other corn. You just have to buy the right seed to plant it.

Yes, popcorn kernels are from cobs of corn. I believe they are dried and then the kernels loosened whole. If their shell is damaged they won't pop.

I think if you took cobs and dried them, you could make your own pop corn. However, I'd read up on types of corn, and what kind of popcorn it makes. Maybe see what type of corn is used by Orville and other popcorn producers. I bet you could also get the procedure for making popcorn from the web.

Have fun ;)

You can buy seeds to plant popcorn but the growing is only part of the secret. The moisture content of the kernels needs to be a certain amount to form steam to "pop" the kernels. You can find info on the web about this.
