I am roman catholic and had gone to catholic school for my whole life. WHen i was in the 8th grade the banned us from wearing costumes to school because Halloween was a roman holiday that symbolized the devil. We usually would dress up to scholl, play all day , and then in the evening our school had an additional halloween party. They didnt take away the evening party but the took away the day of fun.Now although I kind of understand that it wasn't a catholic holiday, i think that Halloween now does not have the meaning it had back then. Back then people would give food to the devil to wear away demons..or something of that nature..now it's a day for kids to dress up and have fun. So i think it was wrong for the school to take that away from them. what do you think? ( note not all catholic schools do this)

I have never in my life heard anything about "giving food to the devil to wear away demons" on Halloween, Catholic or not. It doesn't have anything to do with that & the form of halloween that we celebrate here in America has its origins in Scottish & Irish emigrants who came over. It is far removed from whatever beginnings it had, but hasnt' ever been about the devil or satan or anything like that.

If you think dressing up in a costume and asking strangers for candy is evil and lets the devil loose then no you shouldn't celebrate Halloween. If on the other hand that doesn't seem to evil to you then maybe Halloween is okay. While the date for Halloween does indeed fall on the same day as a pagan Holiday celebrating the harvest it's name is christian. It's an old English form of all hollows eve. The evening before all saints day. An important holiday in the early days of the church.

They didn't give food to the devil...
Halloween origins are a time in which Druidism and Celtic Reconstructionists celebrate Samhain as a feast for the dead. Divination and fortune telling is believed to have better communication with the spirit world because the fall season holds the thinnest partition between the two worlds of the living and the dead. The Druids built huge sacred bonfires to offer sacrifices to the many Celtic deities that number over five hundred named gods. Before each yearly sacred bonfire, the Celts would extinguish their hearth fires and relight them with embers from the bonfire.

The idea of the devil did not even exist until after the formation of Christianity and the church..So they could not have been giving food to the devil because back in the day the devil didn't exist...

Personally I don't think it is any harm to have a party with dress up and candy.. (If you don't consider cavities, lol) Nowadays Halloween does not even somewhat resemble it's original origins..It has become increasingly commercialized and tame, and therefore under supervision could not possibly be a bad thing for the kiddies..

Halloween is not bad it is just that some groups don't want their members supporting an event that has pagan roots.
The day was originally called ,"all hallows eve" and was a day to honor and cleanse the dead.
It is important to note that all holy books were written by men and as such have a himan factor. Perhaps they are afraid of those things that they don't understand. The Christian church was never too zealous to rid converts of their holy days - they were just altered.Eg . Jesus' birthday historically was in the spring not December as noted in Josephus in his reference to the censuswhich necessitated Mary and Joseph's pilgrimmage to Bethlehem.
Haloween is totally inert and if you believe in God you can mascarade as a prophet or other historical figure, If on the other hand one worships darkness then there are many more options. This is the one night of the year when we really get to be who we want to - for some peopls this can be very therapeutic. Therefore I say that halloween isa good thing.
Have a great day

The Roman holiday had nothing to do with the devil. When the church was looking to convert people in Europe, they choose a holiday that "pagans" were already celebrating and said continue to celebrate, only this is how you do it now. Halloween comes from All Hallows Eve and the early church used to celebrate the Hallows Mass.

I don't think Halloween is bad. It may have started out to be bad but now its just a fun holiday. Basically for most its just a time to dress up, get free candy and have fun. My catholic school let us have halloween parties when i went there.

Here's what Wikipedia said. Halloween originated under a different name(Samhain) as a pagan festival among the Celts of Ireland and Great Britain with mainly Irish and Scots as well as other immigrants transporting versions of the tradition to No. America in the 19th cent. A virgin would be sacrificed to appease some god. The next day, they would morn the death of the virgin which is why it is called All Saint's Day.

Halloween now a days isn't a bad thing.
Back in like the 1600's it was, but now all it really is about is candy, costumes and total fun.
The School should have let them have the day fun.

I totally agree with you. I am amrried with a child and my wife is definetly more religious than me, and that great, I dont mid, but her faith sometimes gets in the way of some holidays, Halloween being one of them. I have allways loved Halloween since I was a kid, but my wife refuses to let my son grow up and see the fun side of it. I always tell her that it is important for her and I to understand the true menaing of Halloween and let our son grow up and enjoy it like a kid should, then whe he grows up, he can decide wether he likes it or not.
