Nitrogen Reservoirs On Earth

2017-01-15 03:47:38 · answer #2 · answered by lonon 4 · 0 0

I'm not sure.... and here is why...
It is true that 70% or so of the AIR is nitrogen...but that does not mean it needs to be the largest reservoir. Nitrogen is an essential part of most living organisms. Most of the bodily fluids and enzymes have nitrogen in a bonded form.... This is true even in case of plants....

Thus, I guess one can never really be sure which is the largest reservoir of nitrogen considering the extremely large number of animals and plants that exist today....

But one thing is for sure... all the nitrogen gets recycled by the nitrogen cycle

The largest store of Nitrogen is found in air where it is mainly found as N2. The Nitrogen cycle is the process by which Nitrogen from the atmosphere is used by living organisms and is used to produce amino acids, proteins and nucleic acids.
The atmospheric store of nitrogen is about 1 million times larger than the store contained in living organisms and orgainc matter in the soil and oceans.
