The main empires of what is today Mexico were the Mayans and the Aztecs. The mayans civilization fluorished from around 300 to 900 BC, then it declined in importance, they abandoned their cities, although mayan people still live in portions of Mexico and Guatemala. The Aztecs are thought to have reached Mexico around 1300 BC and slowly built an empire that reached its zenith around the time of Cortéz arrival in 1521. As newcomers to a inhabited region, they fought their way to become the dominant power in Central Mexico. The current capital of Mexico, Mexico City is built over the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan.
