Sounds like your pull switch is broken -- it happens often enough that you can buy the switches at any hardware store. Typically, there is a small spring inside the switch itself, that breaks.... since the switch is riveted together (most cases) it is easier to simply replace the switch. This is not difficult to do.
First thing to do, turn off the power to the ceiling fan/light.
The switch itself is held in place by a knurled knob, which the chain/string runs thru. You will also need to remove the cover, or light fixture, from the fan itself, to get inside to the wiring of the switch.
The replacement switch can be bought at any hardware store, and typically has two wires. Oh, don't lose that knob off the old one, it matches your fan, and can be used on the new switch. The switch is probably connected using 'wire nuts', and/or electrical tape. I strongly recommend using appropriate sized wire nuts, and then a little electrical tape to hold them in place. I advise against using ONLY electrical tape.
Simply undo the wire connection, pull the switch chain thru the housing, and install the new one. This is probably a $2 to 4$ part, and should take about 10 minutes total to repair. The only tools required would be a screwdriver (to remove the housing, or light fixture) and a meter to check for electrical current -- to make sure you have turned off the power -- don't guess - be certain, hehehe.
I once took someone else's word about an electrical circuit being off -- wound up grabbing ahold of a couple of live 220 wires in a factory ceiling, hehehehe... ever since... I carry my own meter, lol. You can buy an inexpensive voltmeter at department stores, auto parts stores, building supply and hardware stores. The simpler ones have a digital read-out, and you can expect to pay $12 to $25, depending on where you buy it. This is a good investment. I recommend that one should be in everyone's tool box. If you don't have a tool box, with basic tools... now is a good time to start collecting.

I assume if there is no "click" it is broken! Best thing to do is replace the whole fan that has a light. Now days, it seems to be cheaper to replace than repair anymore, especially small things like that. I would exactly want to pay an electrician 50 or 60 dollars an hour (or whatever they charge) to fix a broken light in a fan. You can buy the whole fixture for $30 in many stores today.

The light socket is probably broken but just turn off the electricity in your room then unscrew it with a screwdriver and go to the hardware store and get a new one just like it. It will only cost a couple of bucks. Then wire in the new one to the screws on the side. Its easy.
