It's a mystery. Biologically we know the sperm and egg join together and 46 chromosomes combine which will determine a person's unique characteristics......but it is the hand of God which bestows life on the tiny zygote and gives it an immortal soul.

The parents do not give life, they only supply God with the materials.

Conception is only the first step; once the egg and sperm unite to create a fertilized cell, that cell must go through many more steps to grow into a baby.

As it floats down the fallopian tube toward the uterus, the cell divides into two. Those two cells then divide to make four, and the division continues. In a week or so after fertilization, the growing cluster contains about 100 cells. It then attaches itself (implants) in the wall of the uterus, where it settles down to grow.

Some of the cells in the cluster form the embryo, the part that will eventually develop into a baby. Other cells multiply to form an organ called the placenta, which connects with the uterine lining to draw nourishment and oxygen from the mother's blood to sustain the developing embryo. The placenta also produces hormones, which enter the mother's bloodstream and spread through the body. These hormones alert the body that a baby is growing in the uterus, and they signal the uterus to maintain its lining rather than shedding it. That means the woman does not have a period that month. This may be her first sign that she is pregnant.

Okay - I'm guessing you're young so this is probably a question best suited for your parents. But, here's the technical biological explanation for how it happens (it's really not a mystery). There are two sex cells - women have ova (eggs) and men have sperm. Every person has 46 chromosomes and each sex cell (either the egg or the sperm) have 23 chromosomes. By themselves they do nothing. During intercourse a man ejaculates millions of sperm into the body. They begin to make their ascent up to the ovaries where they will attempt to unite with an egg. The egg emits a chemical that draws the sperm to it. If an egg become fertilized, that is if one sperm successfully penetrates the corona (outer area) of the egg they fuse together and a new 46 chromosome cell is formed. This new cell (now called a blastocyst) makes its way down to a woman's uterus where it will implant. It continues to divide and grow bigger and new cells are formed from this blastocyst. Eventually as the cells differentiate it will become a zygote, then an embryo, then a fetus, then a baby!

After sex, the sperm swims up through the cervix, through the uterus, and meets the egg in the fallopian tube. The first sperm to make it burrows into the egg and fertilizes it.
