Carbon is one of the main components of black powder, which is used as a propellent in fireworks. Carbon provides the fuel for a firework. Common forms include carbon black, sugar, or starch.

Using only sorbitol and potassium nitrate you'll be flying homemade solid fuel sky rocket sugar rockets in no time.

No it will not explode, what´s important is the geometry of the burning chamber, it must be designed so that gases can get out fast , it must have a star like section.

Its not so much the type of powder rather than the burning chamber. If you try and burn gunpowder without a vessel it will just flare up nicely. If you enclose one end you get a rocket. If you burn it in an enclosed space then you get an explosion.
