1. Skill 2. Skill and let me see now, number three, what could it be...oh, yes... 3. Skill Hey, if a woman shows major-league talent, a team will sign her. Simple as that. It would be great for that team economically; the team gets talent, and they get a player who will bring fans into the ballpark. The tough part is that there really are no women who have shown major-league talent. This is likely because for the vast majority of girls, softball is the game of choice. Once they switch to softball, it becomes virtually impossible to come back to baseball and play it at the same level as the world-class athletes who play Major League Baseball. It is nearly impossible to win a game of catch-up when competing against world-class athletes. So, the day a girl picks up a softball, she is placed at an extreme disadvantage. So, only a very tiny percentage of girls are still playing baseball by the time they get to high school. After that, I don't know if there are any currently playing in college or the minor leagues (though I'm not sure). Therefore, you're starting with a very tiny percentage of girls who can even POTENTIALLY play MLB. The odds are just stacked so heavily against them. In order for a woman to break into MLB, there would have to be some extraordinary drop in the popularity of softball. Simple as that. To give them a chance to play MLB, you have to have more young girls deciding that they want to play baseball. It won't happen any time soon, but one day if it does, I'll be rooting for her.

Sammy Khalifa was the first Muslim to play Major League Baseball - he debuted for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1985 and split the next three years between the majors and whatever the Pirates' AAA team happened to be at the time.
