Compared to an air conditioner, fans use very little power. Just look at the cord on a fan compared to an AC cord, and you will get a sense of what kind of juice is going through.

Fans use much less that an AC unit.
Reason: Fans are coil - induction based. It takes very little current to turn the central core ( fan shaft).
As current travels through the coil it turns the core at a rate proportional to the current traveling through it. Increase the current you increase the speed of the core's rotation. It don't take a lot of current to do this simple very fundamental task. There is no pump / compressor involved, no harmful gas stored in the unit, and it is very mobile.
They even have Fans that are thermostatically controlled for in the window.

Downside: a fan does not change the temperature of the air molecules - it only accelerates them. Therefore, its effects are not long term.

If an AC were more economical then the building trades would be installing AC units in our attics rather than exhaust fans...right?

Air condtioners have compressors in them, most need 220v lines due to their high wattage "use". Fans are simple electric motors, they use less wattage. That's how we are charged for use of electricity; wattage per time.
There are many ways to operate fans mechanically without fuel or electricity, perhaps by using a coil spring that you wind up every hour or two. A more efficient way would be to use a politician to stand and fan us with big palm leaves - as long as they don't talk. More efficient because it would not only put them to good use (finally), it would keep them occupied so they can't do what they do otherwise.

Yes absolutley more efficient! The compressor in the AC takes alot of energy plus the AC typically has two fans that use alot of energy also. Ceiling fans and other fans are way better for energy plus you gotta get used to the heat!

My husband is an electrician and he said though they don't use much you have to remember they are only circulating hot air. If you use your a/c efficiently, the cost will not be much more than the fans. He suggests to get a thermostat that's programable. We have one and is programed to keep our house warmer when noone is home and our bill has only gone up around $20 more than without air and we stay comfortable at all times. You can set it higher when you are away from home and at night. You know your budget.Hope you - Stay Cool!!!

No. Ordinary portable fans use less than a 60w bulb. Using fans will be less costly, but you get some noise, and the electric motors give off some heat.

Be careful when it is really hot outside--or else the fans act like the fans in a convection oven and you can get overheated (cooked) quickly on a hot and humid day. We have dozens of people die every summer where I live bc they rely solely on fans!

First answer is correct.
Air conditioners also have fans, but most of the power consumtion comes from the compressor.

no, not much, not nearly as much as A/C, 4 fans probably use less than 1 TV.

fans will cost you more; anything with a motor makes your meter spin like a top...
