Because to nearly all of the rest of the world "soccer" always has been football to them. "Soccer" is hust a slang name for football meaning "association football". You have to look at the complete history of football and you'll see that it is us`American's who should really be calling "soccer" by it's proper original name. By today's standards is it appropiate to call the NFL football anymore? No, not really. If anyone should be calling anything by another name it should be us Americans calling "soccer" football and renaming what we call American football but that isn't likely going to happen. You can't expect the rest of the world to change just to suit us because we call football "soccer" and it's confusing to people here when you talk about football refering to the NFL. This is one reason why the rest of the world don't like us very much. So in short if anyone should be changing anything to end the confusion it should be us Americans changing the name of the NFL and that style of football to another name.

Without resorting to name calling and who's right or wrong, the vast majority of the world calls football, football. About 5 or 6 billion people. Only North America refers to football as soccer. Also, the game existed as football long before American Football was even invented. Personally, I don't think it's too confusing but if we do decide to change, democracy says that it's the US who'll have to do the readjusting.

Actually, if you think about it, we (U.S.A) are about the only country that calls soccer "soccer." The rest of the world (practically) finds soccer to be its most popular sport. Everyone else calls it football. We are in the minority (big time). If we are to get technical, we are the ones who should our terminology of soccer and football (or at least distinguish between the two like ground football (soccer) and air football (American football) or something to at least clear up confusion). But hey, soccer and football words work for us so let's keep it (there's only confusion when you are talking with someone from a different culture really who views soccer as football anyways).

Because in many countries in the world, when we play ball with our feet, it's called "football" in English, or "futbol" in Spanish, or "futebol" in Portuguese. I don't know who had the idea to name this game "soccer". If you play ball with hands and feet, I don't know whether it can still be named "football".
"Soccer" was invented before "football". English Football Association ("soccer" association) was founded in 1863, while the first game of college American football was played on Nov. 6, 1869 using "soccer" rule. So, which one do you think is the original "football"?

ok, one of the main reasons that the rest of the world calls it "football" and not soccer is because going back to when it was first created in England, they decided to call it football because it was mainly played with the feet not the hands

Because "soccer" was called "football" long before American "football" was. It's been around longer and is recognized as "football" by more people.
You don't just change what something is called. No one's going to start calling baseball "bat game."

People are stubborn- especially Americans.
(It would make more sense for Americans to change, considering about 6 billion people use football)
But, we have the NFL which would have to change it's name. (It's not going to, because they are the most stubborn sports organization in the U.S.) and MLS which would have to change their name as well.
I guess they could just switch, right?
:)

Because the US is the only country in the world that calls it soccer. It isn't the other countries that are wrong, it's the US.
