WAN and LAN are the same thing, except WAN is wireless and LAN uses ethernet cables.

You are confused.

I strongly suggest you purchase a computer that has a built in RJ45 Ethernet network port. Most have them today.

This RJ 45 ethernet network port uses a CAT5 cable to link it to a wired router's LAN port or to a wired network switch port to connect you to a LAN.

A LAN is a Local Area Network - so called because it is a network of nearby components (pcs, printers, etc); most often they are all in the same building.

A Wide Area Network is a network in which 2 or more LANS are connected together (e.g. business office in City 1 is LAN 1, business office in City 2 is LAN2. The WAN connects LAN 1 and LAN 2.

The WAN can be the Internet using a Virtual Private Network (VPN). It can also be a dedicated point - to - point leased line from the Telco.

If you have a single pc and want to connect to the internet with DSL or CATV, you usually plug the computer's network port into the DSL or CATV modem directly so in this mode you can say the network port of the pc provides WAN connectivity.

If you have more than 1 pc and want to connect to the internet, you usually use a router. All network devices plug into a network switch and one port of the network switch plugs into the router LAN port. (If your router has more than 1 LAN port built in you may not need a network switch). The internet connecton plugs into the router WAN port.

Hello

The term WAN refers to Wide Area Network. It is more of a concept in networking. A computer doesn't have a WAN port and doesn't need it. WANs are connected through routers using special WAN technologies.
LAN refers to Local Area Connection and represents the network between your computer local computers (eg the same building). To connect to it, you need a Network Interface Card, typically using an Ethernet connection named RJ45 (8 pin connector). Almost all computers have it today, so don't worry. You can ask although.

LAN is local area network. This is what you use for a local connection, including the connection to your line for broadband or dialup. WAN is wide area network. This is any network linking many lan groups, generally now this is the internet. You will not get a machine with WAN, the WAN connection is made by your adsl or cable modem/router, or by the standard modem on dialup.
