Hi Professorprius,
Thanks very much. That's just the sort of answer that I was looking for!
Straight from the horse's mouth (as it were) Another guy mentioned Dealers.
But I didn't get very far with THEM:
"I pronounce it Pr-eye-us! But Joe, down the road who's the brother-in-law of a bloke who once went out with a Japanese girl whose sister was a cleaner at Toyota says it's Pree -us!!
Thanks to those who mentioned the adverts: they also seem conclusive.
Did you know that Biro is pronounced Beero? They spent millions on advertising this! And finally gave up in despair.

Toyota pronounces it Pr-ee-us, original Latin was Pr-eye-us (a legal term meaning a preliminary hearing in a civil case). Toyota uses it generally to mean "to come before".

Any vehicle that moves using two sources of power is a hybrid vehicle. A moped is a hybrid because it can use your legs or a small engine for propulsion. Prius are considered full hybrids because they can move using only electricity. The gas engine does not have to run to move the vehicle. The Prius uses a serial or parallel hybrid system, meaning one or both can run independent of each other. A partial hybrid has to have the gas engine running to move the vehicle. The electrical system provides an assist of some sort, but not the only source of propulsion. The Honda Accord is a partial hybrid, it cannot run on electricity alone. A mild hybrid uses a generator to start the gas engine or to run electrical parts of the vehicle, but that is all it does. The Chevy Silverado pickup has a mild hybrid system that shuts off the engine when the truck stops and to power a plug in the bed for tools, but it does not move the truck in any way. You'll see full, partial, mild or other terms that mean basically the same thing when you read about hybrids.

I suspect the correct Japanese pronunciation is "pree-us".
If it was "preye-us", the romanisation (conversion to the Roman alphabet, as used in western Europe, USA, etc.) of the Japanese would be "Praius", not "Prius" according to the normal rules for romanising Japanese.

Yet I her lots of people call it PR-EYE-US - and that includes me.
