My favourite book of all time is Gone with the Wind, from the opening line I was hooked. I first read it as teenager and have re read it about once a year since. So much better than the movie.
Also War of the World by HG Wells ending a bit weak but if you look at the time it was written his imagination for aliens and space ships is amazing.
Also I would tell anyone who has not read the Harry Potter to try it even if you think its for kids its really addictive.

Hmm, tough decision to make here...

I can't recommend only one, I'm afraid, so here's one book and a trilogy:-

1) 2001: A Space Odyssey, by Arthur C. Clarke

2) The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy (A Trilogy In Five Parts), by Douglas Noel Adams

I LOVED 'A Prayer for Owen Meany'. What a great book. I cried and cried at the end of it and couldn't forget about it for ages!
I also love Wuthering Heights and think Holden Caulfield in A Catcher in the Rye is a great character. I also really enjoyed The Grapes of Wrath.
But, Owen Meany - man, John Irving is something else, he really is. I've read all his books and they are simply joyous!!!

Afraid it's more than one book, but it's one long story.
The Foundation Trilogy by Isaac Asimov.
The first page or two are tough to get into, but after that, you'll be hooked. A tale going thousands of years into the future..brilliant!
I'm surprised they haven't made a film of it. It's a bit like Star Wars, Star Trek..whatever rolled into one, but more grown up and compelling. Try it.

The best book I've read recently has to be The Green Mile, Stephen King. I just picked it up randomly one day and couldn't put it down which surprised me as I don't really like Stephen King.

I know he cranks the books out and they are all kind of same, but I really liked Desperation by Stephen King. The book has a lot of blood a guts and kind of scary.

His Dark Tower series is quite good also.

There's millions of fantastic books out there. How do you pick just one? Two great authors - Dean Koontz and J.R.R Tolkien. I did read two exception books from the library called Angel and Archangel by Garry (forgot the surname, but they were damn good)!
