Your bf/gf told you a person of the opposite sex that they used to work with tried to crack on to them, but it took them 5 years to tell you about it? And when you query it further at a later date (say the next day) they say oh I just made it up.

I would think that either a) my bf/gf had lost their marbles for making up such a malicious story. Or b), my bf/gf takes me for an idiot, and is trying to pretend they didn't just confess that to you. I wouldn't let this go, that's a really strange thing to "make up". Still, if nothing happened, you have nothing to worry about. Do you trust said bf/gf? I think this is a more important question you should be asking.

Was he / she drunk when the told you ? I would say they wanted to get something off their chest and came clean, then decided they didn't want to deal with it so told you they were just messing round.
Either that, or, they were testing you to see what your reaction would be.
