My mom has ContraVirus software on her PC that produces a stream of popups. I have been trying to help her to fix the problem, but we are 3,000 miles apart and she is not very computer savvy. I walked her through downloading the free TrendMicro Housecall to scan her system, but it has been running for 24 hours and is stuck in the middle still. Has anyone dealt with this before-or know of any good resources for her?

Try booting in safe mode with network. To get in safe mode tap F8 when booting you computer. Go to Start – Run - type “iexplore http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html ” (with out ”) – Enter (ok)
Do a full system scan. If something is found, delete it, reboot and do the same again.
When that scan does not find anything you reboot again in safe mode with network.
Go to Start – Run – type “iexplore http://www.ewido.com/en/ “ (with out ”) – Enter (ok) Do a full scan. If you find something, delete it, reboot and do the same again.
When no one of these scanners is showing anything your computer is clean and you can reboot back to normal mode. Then you need to get some protection.

*Note: Do not surf the net or open any programs during this two scans. This because you can start spyware/adware/viruses manually.

Download a antivirus program. If you don’t have it that is.
AVG and Avast has some free ones. http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1 http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-virus-cleaner.html
There are more free antivirus programs out there. What’s the best of them I don’t know, but Avast and AVG are good. I use Norton Internet Security.
Also try scanning with some antivirus online scanner like http://www.bitdefender.com/ and a security/antivirus scanner like http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/home.asp?langid=ie&venid=sym&plfid=23&pkj=QVLBZTVOGXFSTZHSZPW&bhcp=1

You also need a firewall. If you don’t have it that is. ZoneAlarm has a free one.
http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp;jsessionid=GcFIn2wsmBu1XxQceQKRSqGfL9zm7PLpR2R4z9G1Ux8kAskyuuMG!-618052328!-1062696904!7551!7552!NONE?dc=34std&ctry=&lang=nb&lid=trial_zaFamily
Disable Windows firewall if it’s not disabled automatically. That is if you download another firewall.

Also have some spyware/adware removers like Ad Aware SE Personal and Spybot-S&D.
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
( Download Ad Aware here http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html ) AVG also have a free anti spyware. http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
You can also scan with a online anti-spyware scanner like Ewido anti-spyware. http://www.ewido.net/en/
Ewido anti-spyware 4.0 is now AVG anti-spyware 7.5.

When you have cleaned your system, disable System Restore, reboot and then re-enable System Restore when you log back on. This will clear the malware that may still be in System Restore, which could be reinstalled should you need to rollback at some point.

It sounds to me as though you have a bug in the TrendMicro Download. You will need to use a debugger to find the break point, or the point where it's stuck. A good Debugger program is " Rock Debugger " to download, use it to find the bug, then uninstall the debugger program. It's free for a one-time use, then you uninstall it for others to use. You might need someone to show you how to find the break point.
