It's been called that for eons. Most women used a special linen or cloth and since the purpose was to clean or to gather a "spill" it naturally followed that it would be a napkin. Since you would want to distinguish it from the napkin on the table, you would add "dainty" or "personal". Somebody eventually came up with the idea that it was a sanitary item, and hooked the term together. I must say I like it much better than "rag".

I've always wondered that. It's not really a napkin and it doesn't seem sanitary... I guess that's better that other names for it I can think of, but won't mention.
