My friends call me the white girl in the group because i listen to what they call "white people music." I cant help it I listen to what I like. I like to think of myself as liking all different types of music. I know theres nothing wrong with that but I cant help but wonder why my friends have such a hard time accepting my taste in music. Any opinions? Any similar situations?

When involved with friends of a particular (any!) culture the common bonds include music. These signifiers provide boundaries around your culture/group and other peoples. Its a language, a way of communicating your differences and similarities if you see what I mean. Therefore, your friends within your group are shunning any other signals such as music that may appear out of place with the groups taste and flavor. Its human nature for us to go along with the majority. They probably like the music you do, but are too uptight to say anything!! More power to you for liking what YOU like. Maybe some of your group will take your example and express their own genuine interests for things.

I have nearly the same problem, I like a few forms of rap, which most of my friends hate and call "gangtah mewsick". Once I was talking to my parents about some of my musical likings and my brother called me a "w*gg*r" (the supposed "white form" of the word... well.. y'know).

I'm the only person I know who doesn't have any interested in rock music. Yes, i like rock, but I don't stick to JUST and ONLY rock. I travel all through the genres. I like music for what it is, not for who it's by or what "color" the artist is. I also enjoy oldies and music from other countries. I look for all the different kinds of music I can, i can't stick to only one or two kidns!!
I hate how people can put such nasty names onto music.. like "white people music", "black people music", etc. It's so annoying and unture. People are people are people, and music is music is music. Does it really matter what color the artist is and and color the listeners are?? I don't think so.. i just like music =)

There is nothing wrong with your taste in music. Your friends are just stereotyping. I'm personally into rock music, but I use to like the pop and hip hop songs. Not so much now, but I still listen to a few songs that I like. Your friends just need to chill and to stop putting put stereotypes.

It is unfortunate indeed that in 2007 we as a society are still caught up in "color association" as individuals we should be able to enjoy what we like and not just what our peers enjoy. You should explain to your friends that in this new century you are not constrained by your color to enjoy other art forms and cultures. You are a very open minded person and should be applauded for knowing yourself well enough to say that you like something others do not. I always have loved country music - it tells a story - does that mean I am a hick - no just that I like a song to tell a story. Your friends should appreciate you for who you are and not just your musical pleasures. If you find it too confrontational perhaps you need to re-evaluate your choices in friends - real friends let us be ourselves and applaud all of the differences that make us the person they love and wish to be with. Good Luck!

I think it's great when people listen to a lot of types of music. Music is one thing that can bring all different types of people together. There are very few types of music that I really can't listen to.

Your group of friends is small compaired to the city, county, country. Provincial attitudes tend to be exclusive and part of the cost of being in any group is conformity. Wear what we wear, speak like us, listen to what we listen to.
This tends to keep us from broadening our perspective or growing beyond the tight bounds of our group's subculture.
Let them know that you are more than your click, social circle, group. You have eclectic tastes and this is just how you want to be. You can be a leader if you wish and not just a follower.

No, it's not your fault. Your hears like what they like. Your are simply well-rounded and culturally inclined when it comes to your music palette. I hate when people try to but color labels on music. Music is blind to color. There is no rule or law that says only this ethnic group should listen this particular music and their ears should never meet the "forbidden music." Music genres ( pop, hip-hop, rock, r&b, hip-soul, rap, country, jazz etc.) are accessible to everyone. Personally, I listen to all genres of music. If it sounds good than I like it and do not care about the negative attitudes that my friends may have regarding race and music. I bet you that your friends like the same music too, behind closed doors, but hide behind stereotypes. By listening to what you like and not conforming to your friend's stereotypical views, you are refusing to live inside that invisible box.

What on Earth is "White People Music?"

I'm Caucasian and I have no idea what white music is. I listen to Country, Oldies, Blues, Classic Rock, Pop, Jazz, Opera, Classical, Heavy Metal, etc...

Is that "white music?"

race and music really should have no bearing on each other. i believe musical taste comes from one of two places, depending on the person:

1) you listen to what expresses you as a person

2) you listen to what you think makes you look cool

it's the second of those two that has created the idea of 'white' and 'black' music.

and plenty of artists cross those lines two. sage francis and slug are two of my favorite rappers -- both are white-- and jimi hendrix was the biggest rock star of the century, and he was black.

really, what i'm getting at is; rock on for listening to what makes you happy! dont let anyone else tell you what you should like.

If you dont listen to the same music as them they will try and classify it in a less then favorable manner as a way of trying to get you to conform to the group norms. I say do what you like and if anyone can't hang with it then its 100% on them.
