My laptop is a Toshiba Tecra S1. The specs say:

Memory:
* Standard 512MB DDR
* Maximum 2GB
* Expansion Modules 128MB, 256MB, 512MB, 1024MB
* PC2700, PC2100 modules
* 2 Expansion memory slots (One filled with 512MB, can be replaced by 128MB, 256MB, 512MB or 1GB modules).

Can I just buy the regular DDR ram being sold everywhere or do I need to buy special notebook ram (which seems pricier). Not sure what to order!

There are a "few" laptops that use "Standard" DDR, but most us DDR2 sodium memory. It is designed for laptops. It is physically smaller then standard ram. Just take your computer to one of the local computer repair stores. They can tell you what type of RAM you require. Changing it is a very simple procedure.
