Calling it an 'empire' is rater a stretch, but Edward I was successful in giving England control over most of Scotland, as well as increasing his holdings in France. Most of these gains were lost under his son, the far less competent Edward II.

He gained control over Wales but did not quite subdue Scotland. He made very little headway in France and his wars cost him a fortune. It was left to his grandson, Edward III to start the Hundred Years War and get stuck into France.
