One of the best things that happened to Japan was losing the war to the US because old feudal enterprises that had held the vast majority of the Japanese in poverty were broken up. Women were given the right to vote. Universal education was begun. Unions were permitted for the first time in the country's history and a middle class emerged. Japan could not have made these and other positive changes in its society and its economy by itself because vested interests controlled it and would not have permitted change. It is a terrible tragedy that it took losing a war to accomplish this, and an even greater tragedy that the atomic bombs were dropped.

There are two schools of thought about the bombings. One, that it was necessary because it shortened the war and saved literally millions of lives. The other, that the bombings were unspeakably inhumane. Yet there is a third factor that is seldom considered: The USSR joined in the war against Japan once it had dispatched Germany, it had hundreds of thousands of troops in the far East prepared to invade Japan. It is thought by many historians that the "tipping point" in the decision to bomb Japan with nuclear bombs was to keep the USSR from invading--to put Stalin on notice that his country, too, could be annihalated. In which case the bombings were a horrible sacrifice, yet as bad as they were, they headed off an even worse disaster--Stalinist death camps slaughtering millions of Japanese.

This has always been a difficult issue for me to decide about. Still to this day I do not have a firm conclusion about the issue, one way or the other. It was a horrible thing, there is no doubt about that. I wish to God none of it had ever happened. We can only hope and pray that it never happens again, and we really should work for peace, it is the only means of assuring that it does not happen again.

Yes, and they seem to be doing pretty well nowadays. You have no idea how awful Japan was, do you? You just heard this talking point and thought you could make the US sound like the worst country on the planet. Go learn about the MILLIONS of Chinese the Japanese murdered, the torture they put on their own people, and that's only a few of the horrendous things the Japanese did.

Go taunt them, hater.

They nuked the two cities to stop the war and save possibly a hundred thousand U.S. and allies lives, and probably several million Japanese lives. Democracy, with a powerless emperor, naturally followed. Too bad we couldn't do the same in Indochina and Iraq.

Yes we also included many other things. Currently Japan is not allowed to produce Nuclear weapons and anything they do militarily still has to go through the USA. Basically Japan is only allowed to create a militia used for land protection not for proactive protection. Hence why we still have a base in Okinawa.
