You are getting mixed responses for a good reason, eMachines PC's are rather hit & miss. They use lower quality components in the build of their PC's. This allows them to deliver the same bells & whistles as the "big guys" for a lower price...BUT...it also increases the chances that you'll get a "lemon".
Basically, if you are somewhat computer savvy, and don't mind the hassle of potentially exchanging a bad unit, the eMachines aren't a terrible way to save some money. If the prospect of possibly being on a return/exchange merry-go-round makes you queasy, then you'll want to drop the bucks for a more reliable brand.
I hope this helps you out!

I have been in the computer industry since 1984. I purchased a eMachine in the late 90's and it is still running for me today. Sure, it is quickly becoming obsolete as it is a PIII / 600mhz and can only hold 1gb of RAM, but for certain tasks it works fine. I have only had one problem, and it occurred this past year...the video card stopped working. Since it was not integrated into the motherboard, I was able to find one online for $14 and now all is good.
A Consumer Reports article from this year shows that in a reader response poll, emachines, as far as reliability goes, are just as good as HP, Compaq, Dell and IBM.

Basically, an emachine is the cheapest computer you can buy. I believe they were purchased by gateway a few years back.
At this time, they are a major computer company. I believe if you are going to surf the net and do very simple things, you are going to be just fine with an emachine.
Depends on your needs.
