Do they mean that organized units of Iraqi guerrilla fighters would attempt to occupy the United States mainland? Or, the 'well-trained' and equipt Iraqi army would actually invade North America?

I think you are thinking of this statement in too literal of terms. My thoughts on the matter are, if we withdraw before the Iraqi government can stand on its own and resist the radical influence, the following will happen:

1) The government will collapse, and the country will eventually be controlled by the no holds bar radicals who have made it their mortal mission to take over that country and cleanse it of the "infidel influence."

2) This region will then be used to train, finance, and stage local attacks on U.S. and other western interests. (See Afghanistan prior to 9/11)

3) Eventually, under the cover of a sympathetic government, radicals will once again be able to plan and execute attacks on U.S. soil, perhaps this time even worse than before.

So, if you follow my reasoning, you will see that should we leave prematurely, the terrorists WILL ultimately "follow us home." There will not be a mass invasion, but they can easily strike strategic weak points such as malls, subways, etc.

The terrorists are so busy trying to stay ahead of capture in Iraq that they can't even contemplate another 9-11. We're not talking about some invasion army, but rather small groups of people to hijack planes or plan an attack on a nuclear facility. You only need a handful of people for these activities.

If we withdraw from Iraq, we immediately give them all the time in the world to carefully and methodically hatch their next attack. Right now, anything they do is extremely perilous. If they make a telephone call, it is probably being intercepted by extremely advanced computer programs that are designed to detect terrorist activity. If they try to form a meeting, our spies will tip us off and the meeting will end "with a bang" .... literally! We have cut off their funding and are closely monitoring all bank transactions for any sign of unusual behavior. In brief, we are preventing the terrorists from doing anything more complicated than blowing up buses a few blocks from where they live.

We lose strategic advantage if we leave. The terrorists will breathe a big sign of relief, and then send operatives here to finish the job they started with 9-11. Remember, they had a lot of other targets they failed to destroy.

Yes I do. Here is my logic. How hard is it for a person who wishes to harm the USA and has no criminal background to get a passport and visa to the USA. Catch a flight from a friendly country and just disappear into our society? We cannot even find 80,000 illegal immigrants who are supposed to be deported.

They can then set up shop or go to school under an assumed or fake identity. How hard are those to get again? According to ABC, they sell those on the street in NY City?

So I get here, I aquire a gun from a person who wants to sell on the black market. I take the casings apart and make some home made bombs with bullets or nails in them. Decide who I am going to attack and then carry out the suicide plan in the name of allah.

Will they invade the USA directly? No. Our Army is too strong for that. They will hit weak spots in the USA. Like malls, bars, resturants, or public celebrations where people are unarmed.

Look what the guy with TB did. If someone can do that, I am sure someone who is determined to harm the USA or commit terrorist acts against the USA can do it as well.

EDIT -

Schmorgan I think you are naieve to believe that this scenario cannot happen. We had the FT. Dixon shooters who were recently captured and they were naturalized Muslim citizens. Why hasn't this happened here? It almost did, but a alert citizen at a photo place turned the people in.

Read this story about it.

So get your head out of the sand. Reality stinks doesn't it!

I have to respond to a couple of people running their mouths here.

It's funny that when you point out simple facts like there is no connection between Iraq and 9/11- you are told that you "don't understand" the Iraq war.

Troublemaker- Hitler called, he wants his totalitarian world view back. It is no one's "destiny to rule the world." If only your realized the irony behind using the word "fascist" to label the enemy.

Bob- what's stopping that now? Is every single person who hates us in Iraq?

Johnny 2 Times- you reference Afghanistan pre-9/11. I would argue that Saudi Arabia pre-9/11 is more relevant, except for the fact that when we trained the mujahedeen to resist the Soviet occupiers there (man history was NOT taught in Crawford, was it?) we trained one of them, a guy named Bin Laden, a little too well.

To answer the original question, no. No one with ratonal thoughts believes that complete fallacy. There will always be terrorism, as long as there are weapons and small minded people in the same vicinity. If there was no Islam, there would still be Tim McVeighs.

The more important question is how do so many justify the deaths of our troops out of fear? The "follow us home" argument essentially boils down to "let the troops die so I can feel safe." I can think of nothing more cowardly, more selfish, or more treasonous.

No they try to tell us that we are only fighting terrorism over there, when in fact we are fighting the Sunni insurgents because for some unkown reason we want the Shi'ites to be in power. No one is following us home, stupidest thing I have ever heard. And if I hear one more person refer to the fact there haven't been any strikes since 9/11 because of Bush I will puke. There weren't any in the first place.

Edit... I have read some of the stupid answers people have posted. If they were in fact going to strike here at malls, subways, etc...like these morons believe....they would be doing it already. Just because we are there does not mean they don't have the means to do that here. How stupid is this logic honestly. I like how the one guy points out that they will come here so we have to stay there and then points out that we can't control the illegals we have now...no kidding so how could we prevent it in the first place. NO ONE IS FOLLOWING US HOME.

I think it's more of a figurative then literal, we leave, massive civil war breaks out, the Iraqi government calls us to come back and help out

Why would anyone believe that a group of terrorists set on hurting Americans, would rather face the US military,as opposed to blowing up a few "easy" targets inside our borders,It just simply makes no sense, but some believe what they're told, regardless, instead of logically thinking through the scenario....

Sure there are people that believe this. These are the same people that use terms like 'Islamofascism' without having a clue what fascism is. These are the same people who think Saddam was behind the attacks on 9-11-01. These are the same people who will keep defending Bush's screw-ups even when it's obvious they're in the wrong.
