A big reason that the US is dependant on gas is the number of people who drive extended distances to and from work (more than 20 miles) and the number of commercial vehicles there are. With the consumption of gas, roughly 45% of that is consumed commerically. With the vehicles that are used for commercial purposes, they need gasoline or diesel for the power. It's almost impossible to run a semi-truck on LPG or CNG.

Another issue is the availablity of CNG and LPG. Granted, nearly every home in America is connected to one or the other, but in the case of those two fuels, if they were the primary types of fuel, the prices would be equal to that of what gasoline/diesel is right now. Standard supply and demand.

Even though most people are connected to NG or LPG at their houses, the price to install the filling stations at their houses, or at regular filling stations is just exhorbitant.

Now, the United States is looking into alternative fuel. The US is actually the leading country in investing money for alternative fuels, and one of the top five largest producers of Alternative Fuel and Electric vehicles. And actually, Hydrogen powered vehicles are supposed to start hitting mainstream within the next five years.

LPG Vehicles have been available in the US since the 1970's, and CNG vehicles have been in the US since the late 1980's. The demand for them has been low due to the scarcity of the alternative fuel filling stations.

Consumer inertia and historical reasons....we've always been used to filling our vehicles with gas or diesel to a smaller degree and as long as the supply doesn't dry up or cost way too much, it's easier to just do what you've been doing. Other countries that did not have our oil boom had to make other choices and expand on them. Infrastructure for other forms of fuel are costly and complex enough to inhibit their widespread use right now---demand for them and building them go hand in hand but that will probably change little by little---all the gas stations we have today didn't pop up overnight either..

Lazy Americans, we don't pick fruit either - we have people from the south for that crap.

We are now stuck with a 400+ a month payment for these import cars that you make. We put all kinds of aftermarket crap on them and still get a spanking from almost any american car.
