Everytime I go to Mass (Quincy, Worcester areas, sometimes Cape Cod too) I say that I love the weather. This is during summer when it's in the low-90's. I am from Death Valley, CA, and they think I'm so weird. Why?

As a lifelong Massachusetts resident (although i lived in RI for 2 years). The reason why people in Mass think you are weird is because as a whole Massachusetts/New England Weather is completely unpredictable. I've always hated the weather here because its not temperate at all. Mark Twain had a famous quote that went something like "If you don't like the weather in New England just wait a minute". It is not uncommon for it to be 90+ hazy, hot, and humid and then the next day have it be 50-60 degrees raining and raw. When its hot in Massachusetts it hazy and humid, when its cold its often accomponied by wind sheer. As a result of these types of dramatic changes people who live in Massachusetts are not able to "adapt" or get used to the weather so our bodies don't necessarily react to it well, when its hot its oppressive, and because it will only last a couple of days, by the time our body gets used to it, boom it changes. Its just hard. Now that said, I refuse to ever complain about the heat because I hate the cold! I mean really really hate the cold.

You'd have to understand Massachusetts - New England for that matter - weather and the mentality of its residents therein.
Three days of 90 is considered a heat wave; and around these parts we never get just 'hot' for weather - we get the triple wammy - Hazy Hot AND Humid; our systems are quite delicate, not enough time to adjust to the climate, cuz as it may swelter for 4 days straight, then drop to 40, or rain and have to bastardized gawl to still be muggy afterward.
The only refuge we manage to get is to sludge out to the few beaches - that we can't really swim in anyways because someone's Retriever just took a dump in the shallow end. Communal pools are no better, cuz you may get broken glass, or better yet some crackhead's peed in it.
This is deer tick and rabid mosquito season.
Tons of trees, yet still no breeze.
With the exception of the Cape, you're talking about mainly in-land areas of Mass. My outlook would probably be better if I could get a way to the Vinyard every now and again, but I'd cross that damned Sagamore Bridge!!
Best part of that is that EVERYBODY along the 128 has the very same idea.

So it's not you, trust me.

I think that the personalitites of people from Massachusetts is kinda different. We love the weather in the Summer, because we hate it in the winter. We're very picky though, because the weather changes so quickly and frequently, we could go from a beautiful summer day, to a cold windy thunderstorm in a matter of minutes. But no one really likes when it gets too hot like the low ninties, and prefers the low 80's. People from Massachusetts don't hate you, the only way that you could know that they did hate you when you talked to them, was if you were wearing anything having to do with the New York Yankees, they'd avoid you at all costs.

Because us New Englanders aren't fans of extremes. Most of us prefer our weather somewhere between 55 and 75. I love my four season, don't get me wrong, but the two milder ones (autumn and spring) are my favorites. As an above poster mentioned, 3 days of 90 or higher is considered a heat wave in these parts, and very unwelcome, especially if the humidity is at an oppressive level. There's a reason I don't live in the deep south or in sunny CA. I like mild, and these parts are about as close as you can get to getting year-round mildness. Not the hottest place, not the coldest, just right. They don't hate you, honest. They just get a little snappy when the mercury rises that high. Keep your heat-lovin' comments on the inside, and you'll be set. =)

Two things about New England/New Englanders:
1) Anything above 85 is considered too hot. In fact, 3 consecutive days of 90 degrees or more is defined as a heat wave around here.
2) New Englanders LOVE to complain about the weather, or anything else, for that matter. So if the weather isn't absolutely perfect (for me, that's 70-75 degrees and sunny, with a slight breeze, and very low humidity) then we'll complain about it. So if you're not complaining about the hot weather, you're obviously not from around here.

Oh, and we don't hate you! We do think you're weird, but that's perfectly normal :-)

I don't know. I love the weather here. I grew up in the south and I laugh at people here who complain about humidity. They have no idea really what humidity really is. However, I think that people in Quincy & Worcester are a bit more rude than the rest of us here. :-)

i think you answered your own question

i don't think anybody's going to hold a major hatred towards you for your opinion on the weather

it is relatively nice to you
not for them

however, living in MA
i know
they will complain about the weather all the time
it's too cold
it's too hot
it's to humid
it's too dry
it's too rainy
it's too bright
etc.
that's just the way it is

i personally just say
it's weather
it's hot because i need too appreciate the cold
it's cold so i can appreciate the hot
etc.

MA people are very critical, but not serious

in states like mass and connecticut and maine etc...they are people of seasons..they love the change but whenever it goes to extremes like the 90's for the most part that is to much of a good thing and with them n9ot being used to it like you are they are hot and dont like it...so when your there refrain from commenting on the weather and you will be fine
