I just closed on a house this week and upon moving in I found out that none of the outlets in the kitchen or in the first floor bathrooms are working ... however the built in microwave and fridge are running so I know there has to be electricity running ...

I have tried to reset using the "Test" and "Reset" buttons but so far nothing ... I went down to the basement to see if any circuits were tripped and nothing ...

Does any one have a clue as to what my problem could be and how long/expensive it would be to fix?

Much appreciated!

Most bathrooms today have GFCI outlets(ground fault circuit interruptors) and the circuit for these is entirely it's own dedicated circuit(should be anyway).Look for a breaker in the panel with a test/reset button on it and turn the breaker off and back on (all the way to the left and back to the right) and press the reset button.

As stated, turn off all the breakers and then back on. Look for a GFCI in a different area. I have seen them in a garage (why, I don't know) that control outlets inside the house. I would contact your Realtor if this doesn't work. They may be able to contact the previous owner about it. If you need to call an electrician for something that has been bad for a while, this should have been in the "disclosure" paperwork and the previous owner should be responsible.

Just a quick note about the situation – the other guys covered the basics pretty well – the fridge and microwave may be on a different circuit due to code in your area. In my area – both those devices have to have their own circuits.

Well, Its really strange. But I suggest keeping it unpluged for about a hour just to be sure. If that doesn't work, I'm pretty sure there's some kind of trouble shooting help on the manufactures website. I really don't know. But for some reason external hard drives have a lot of problems. For example, it won't show up in windows explorer. I wish I could help more. Sorry.

some breakers trip without moving the switch that stumped me when i moved into a house with similar problems. turn off all the breakers and then turn them all back on. if that doesn't work please call a electrician he will be able to test the breaker and if it is a problem will replace it correctly. the other reason this could be happening is one of your sockets is bad or has a loose connection and your power is not going past it.

If you used an agent I'd let them know about this!!

Sounds as if the wire may have not been connected or just came lose. Call an electrician if your ability is limited to only checking breakers and such.
