i have purchased a linksys broadband router 54g,after completing the wiring and following all the instructions on the provided CD i cant access the website to make any changes on the router.there is no LAN and i cannot access the internet. but when i connect with the adsl modem alone i can access the net.
the moment i connect the router there is no LAN.I ahve wired all the cables correctly and RJ45 cables.
please help.

thanks for the answers but it does not seem to help.i typed ipconfig in the dos prompt and got 173.253.163.XXX.ok i understand this is dhcp,how do i go to the site to change the settings on the router.i am not able to access the router's page to make any changes??kindly help

the deal i think is that i am using a dsl router UT300r to connect to the internet.this router has a RJ45 and an USB port.i was using this router by connecting the RJ45 to my laptop lan and accessing the net.
i bought the Linksys broadband router since it has a wireless access but still use the ADSL router to connect to the internet .nows my network is like this.phone jack-ADSL router-Linksysbroadband router-laptop lan and wireless.
is using the above set up wrong.if so what should i do as i cannot access the internet.
Do help me!!

hello, there are a few things you can try:
1. check ipconfig, with just the modem connected to the comp. you should get an ip address and a default gateway.
2. ping the default gateway of the modem.
3. reset your router, and run the setup again, making sure once again that all the cables are connected correctly.
4.you will find that with adsl modems when you have them connected to a router, you may need to change some of the settings inside the modem to bridge, as if the adsl modem and the router, have the same ip address, they will clash and will not work correctly, to do this, you may need to ring your ISP.
5. Lastly, you can ring linksys support or you can go to their website, they are very good.

Make sure the router is powered up and the computer is plugged in to the CORRECT connection on the router. Set all your Internet Connections/LAN settings to Auto and your network IP address to Obtain IP address automatically. Start Internet Explorer and when the blank Internet Explorer page comes up, type in 192.168.1.1 into the address bar and hit enter. It should work.

Connect your pc via a rj45 cable to the back of the linksys into one of the ethernet ports. power up the linksys and after it comes up completely power up your pc. open up a dos prompt and try to ping 192.168.1.1. If you cannot type ipconfig and see what your i/p is. You have to have your pc's ethernet card set to dhcp. You cannot have an ip hardcoded unless it is in the 192.168.1 range and you will need to have 192.168.1.1 as the default gateway.
More than likely you have a static I/P on your pc that is not in the 192.168.1 range.

You may need to reset the IP for either the modem or the rounter. If they have the same IP then they will just look at each other, and not access your system. IE, if both are 192.168.1.1
Also, the default IP is usually 192.168.0.1
You should be able to get some help on this from your ISP or your broadband provider.

If the manual says 192.168.1.1, go to the tcp/ip properties for you card and set it to 12.168.1.2 with a netmask of 255.255.255.0. Plug in the cable supplied.
This will allow you to talk to the router for configuration. Turn on it's dhcp and then set your card to automatic. Then re-start the pc and see if it works. After this you should be able to proceed normally.

well youve got it have right...sadly though its almost certainly not DHCP because your on a dsl connection...access your routers config page by opening you web browser and typing in 192.168.1.1 it will ask for a user name and password if you havent set that up for a linksys its default is username "admin" password "admin" on the first page that comes up Change your "internet connection" setting from DHCP to pppoe(point to point protocol over ethernet) this will add a slot for your isp(internet service providors user name and password (ie your email log in if you dont know it or havent set it up then you will have to contact your isp for this info) after putting in this user name and password save and exit your routers config page and youll be online you may need to powercycle the router (just unplugg it and wait 15 seconds) and restart the computer
