You ae correct if you have a wireless router. Routers are stand alone devices and do not need to be connected to any computer.

You have to run a Ethernet line into your laptop to use the internet because the routers in the DSL are not wireless routers.
Also if you have your laptop trying to use the internet and the computer you have plug into the DSL you may have to change a setting that will let both computers use it at once.If you need the manual for the DSL modem then do a search in Google www.google.com search for the model and the brand of the modem.

If the router is wireless you need to configure it with a cable first, then disconnect the cable and use the laptop's wireless utility to find your network, set the encryption and connect. If it is not wireless you either need to get a wireless access point or replace the router with a wireless one.

I'd say CONFIGURE the router on a cat5 cable, then use wireless once the security is set up
