Ok... so now we cant ask children to raise their hands when we ask a question according to a Gov watch dog.
Question: In the UK is it too late to save education? Why must we dumb down teaching techniques? WHY THE HELL DO FELLOW EDUCATORS IN THE UK SIT BACK AND TAKE IT WHEN THE BENEVOLENT TONY KEEPS PUTTING HIS OAR IN?
FOOTNOTE: im out of here! im heading to the USA where they only have to deal with half the stupidity and red tape and i can teach a NON S.O.L subject With out big brother telling me how to do it!
So long, fairwell, goodbye.
ps, To all those liberal educators out there... rot in the mire of your own making! Now you have the educational utopia you deserve, a nation with an average IQ of 10. WELL DONE!

Dear safetyfirst.
Your obviously a limp liberal, glad to know who you are. Id rather send 8 of thirty kids to a good uni then have all thirty fail to get to uni or have 15 scrape a place in a former poly with the educational reputation of a chip shop.
your moronic "fairness" is causing the uk educational system to embrace Failure. Id say that any educator who stands with you and your opinion is at best wrong and at worst a menace to society.

I couldn't agree more - education has been replaced with politics and since the reduction of standards within exams, the average IQ has dropped considerably.
When I was at school it was essential to get good grades in your O'Levels to secure a decent job but now the kids write essays in `text speech` and have to sit exams that 12 year olds wouldn't have found challenging in the 70s and 80s.
Lower the bar of expectation and raise the level of the unemployable!

Oh boy do I agree with you. teaching must be the only job where the specialist is continually told he isn't doing it right.! I am sick to death of initiatives, change, experts and the ruddy government and I am only a school governor.
Its about time the teaching unions got their act together and said enough!! Each generation of children is used as Guinea pigs for another experiment.
I,m off now I have had a rant!!

Wonderful rant, shame no one seems to have read the real story.
DFES has not banned teachers asking children to put hands up. Group of researchers looked at what happens in classrooms and found some childen were not participating. The researchers suggested using flexible methods to maximise all children's participation and progress. Anyone care to rant about that idea? I think the hype about searching for knives deserves more attention from the rant-a-mob.

Every teaching method - over- or mis- used - can create a problematic learning environment.
I can see the reasoning in that it disenfranchises a section.
But c'mon. To ban it all together? It should be used as just one part of the teaching strategies used by any competent teacher.
Really!

Well good riddance; because you've obviously missed the point and failed to comprehend the background to this statement.
It is sloppy teaching to ask a 'one-size-fits-all' question in a class of children with mixed abilities. During your teaching you ought to be generating questions aimed at pupils of many different abilities and directing them appropriately.
All pupils have a right to be stimulated and challenged, merely by accepting answers from the more able children in the form is not helping to stimulate the majority.

Do you really think that American school teachers aren't told what and how to teach?
Well, I hate to break it to you but they are.
Come on over then. We're always in need of good teachers.

Do you also have the liberal trend where it is considered emotionally harmful to fail Johnny even if he can't read, so you have to pass him anyway?

Howcome they say that children are no longer allowed to do this?
I'm guessing at a really pathetic reason.

You are so right, what next, can't ask questions in case someone doesn't know the answer and feels bad?
