That's not a straight forward question, as there are many types of sports injuries. For example, if you rupture your posterior cruciate ligament under the kneecap, you really need to get it seen to ASAP. However, after an initial popping sound and pain, in some cases the pain may subside and the injury may seem to be managable, which is deceptive.

I know this may not be the ideal answer you were looking for, but it has to be taken on a case by case basis. Ideally you would have someone like a phyiso standing by while you played your sport, but otherwise you just need to make a common sense judgement, and weigh the risk of injuring yourself further against the need to carry on your game.

Generally speaking, if the pain disappears or greatly reduces within a minute of inactivity, you are probably okay. If it continues or gets worse after a minute, there is more chance that something is wrong and you need to rest. However, this rule may not always be accurate.

You can usually tell by the amount of pain you are having. Injuries that require medical treatment usually produce severe amounts of pain. It's always best to consult with a doctor if you are having a doubts, because even if you can walk off the injury, you may cause further damage.

By walking it off. If the thing still hurts after a few minutes you probably want to stay off it for a while or see a doctor. Continuing to play can aggrevate it and make the situation much worse.

Yeah just mix all those answers together and then you got best of both worlds(just kidding). But just put two and two together.
