Anyone know why this occurred? I've copied a letter below from a friend and what happend to him:
At home on my computer, I have two firewalls, antivrus, antiphishing, spysweeper and all that I could get to feel secure about my system. Sometimes it was frustrating because I would have to figure out the latest versions just to get on the internet or to recieve / send E-mail. I came home from work, during the day, and I passed by my computer, which was turned off the night before, and noticed that while I was resting it had turned itself on. I had configured BIOS so that it could not be "awakened" for any reason. And since the power had been turned off at the power switch, I was baffled. The first thing that I did was to unplug it from my internet service. Then I rebooted it and it required a password, which I had not implimented nor did I know what it was.
Concerned about what might have been retrieved from my computer, I found out through my bank, that

someone had tried to gain access to various accounts, including an attempt to create an ATM card, which although was active, was not
linked to any finances. The bank had never seen someone get to this level in an account before.
So I closed this account and changed to a new account,I found out that through another source that they had tried to purchase a computer, which was what first allerted various institutions whom notified me, partly because I didn't have nearly that amount of money.
If anyone nows how this could have been done, especially turning on a computer which was off, not in hibernate or sleep mode, please let me know.
I am now using APPLE.

That is his letter. Please advise & thx! 060107 8:55

Everyone - please read his letter carefully - the computer turned itself on while he was THERE. No one broke into his house. The computer woke up and did transactions while he was taking a nap, and he awoke and found it running by itself.....

Answers not helpful since there was not a BREAK IN. So, I'm putting it to the community vote, since I can't find an adequate answer. Thx again. 060107 4:20

The only way to turn a computer on remotely is to have it turned on in the bios. You say it is not turned on. The only way is someone came into the house , turned it on and stole the information. My guess would be that all his bills were gone thru as well and bank account numbers, credit card numbers, etc were taken.

If I find my pc starting on my own I unplug the internet connection for a few days when I shut down at night and then plug it back in a few minutes after I turn the power on. So far the programs just quit when they do not have a way to report to their home. Maybe not all will quit- I will try to solve that if it ever happens to me.

Actually it sounds like someone broke into his house. I dont think there is anyway to turn a computer on without being there. Tell him to search the whole house to see if he finds anything. Does anyone else have access to his house? He really needs to find out. If someone does have access to his house they could come back and steal from him. You should tell him to change the locks.

If this is hacking using another computer then I dont know what to say. I've never heard of anything like that.
