Primarily speaking of slave trade in the US, it was mostly because of labor. Things were not mass produced like they are today and small communities really had to produce their own goods, mostly through farming (wealthy people also used them as servants for house work and cooking). Slaves were cheap to buy and sell (or trade for other goods), and most owners did not pay them for labor. There were also no slave laws so they could be treated any way and be forced to work as long as possible. That would make production almost endless. Try renting Roots if you get the chance, it's an awesome movie.

They were force to be slaves. If you ever read stories of Kinta Kinte you'd know. When the Europeans first arrived in Africa they had guns that made people very scared so they were forced to give people for their own survival.
