Does anyone suffer from clown phobia, or know anyone who does so? I have a friend who believes clowns are evil, and she won't even discuss it. Any advice? This is serious...

I know a lot of people who are afraid of clowns. I don't know anyone who truly thinks they are evil, just creepy. I agree with the others who say your friend needs counseling. Being afraid of clowns is a pretty common phobia, but not being able to even discuss it isn't. Any time a phobia interferes with your life then you should talk to a professional about it.

Its a common kid phobia; in my son, it extends pretty much to anyone who has their face concealed (sports mascots, etc.). At birthday parties, clowns often remove their makeup to be less scary. Perhaps the violence (okay, slapstick) had the wrong influence on the person when young. Besides "It", "Poltergeist" has some scary clown scenes, as well as the lesser-known "Killer Klowns from Outer Space". Even James Bond has used clown makeup as a disguise.

I think clowns are very creepy. But like you said, her problem is serious. Maybe she needs to speak with a therapist about her phobia!

I am a fifty year old woman who has been afraid of clowns all her life. Maybe afraid isn't the right word. I find them depressing. They remind me of drunks and disabled people- nothing funny about either.

My brother does. Ever since he was little. I think his started when he saw the movie Poltergeist where the clown comes to life in the little boy's bedroom.

Sounds funny and stupid, but it really is a legitimate fear.

I've never liked clowns; never thought them to be funny, just bizarre. Its not unusual to feel this way, although I can't explain why. If she doesn't want to talk about it, then don't.
