The link below has a bit of yes and no on "unviersal health care" so it might help the next time you get into this type of discussion.
I'm sort of on the fence with this one myself. I'm tired of paying taxes for things I'll never use or see. My health is fine, I can afford whatever I need both in life and health care. However if I keep getting the burden of taxes on top of taxes I will be FORCED to make other choices.

The problem with healthcare isn't the cost to the consumer. That's the effect. The problem is that there simply isn't enough "healthcare" to go around. Going to a "single-payer" (i.e., socialized government run) system is going to lower the price, which even people that got a D in Economics know will lower the supply while increasing the demand.
Remember the flu scare a few years ago? The one exacerbated by the fact that we went from about ten domestic vaccine producers to two over a mere decade? Remember WHY we lost that productive capacity? Government interference is why.
More government interference doesn't solve problems, it makes them worse.
Ask him where he plans to get the doctors to provide his free healthcare.

What's behind universal health care is the desire of Gen Yers to PRESERVE their inheritances from their Baby Boomer parents.
If the PARENTS have to spend their inheritance on their care in old age (homes, medicines, etc.), there will be no money left for the kids. So the KIDS are pushing for Universal Health Care, so that the GOVERNMENT can pay for ELDER care and thus the INHERITANCE is preserved.
Remember - many Baby Boomers are now hitting 65 and 70, and they have 401(k)s and CDs and stock investments that are going to EITHER: pass to the kids OR pay for their retirement.
And the attitude of the Gen Yers is that they are ENTITLED to Mommy and Daddy's money, so why should it be spent in Mommy and Daddy?

Being called selfish for wanting to protect your property rights is the last resort of a desperate liberal. He basically ran out of points because you kept deflecting them with ease. That's because you are on the correct side of the issue.
There is no reasonable justification for universal health care. As proof to him you can point out the dems' arguments for it. It always comes down to "it's the right thing to do" without further proof. Plus use Rudy Giuliani's point - Have you ever known anyone who desperately wanted to get to Europe for their superior health coverage? Universal health care brings quality of health care down.
I wouldn't be too hard on him though cause he is being tricked by the dems. They really know how to tug at liberal people's emotions and get them to be unreasonable. Not to worry though, American voters in general are too smart to fall for the dems' manipulation.

I'd say half and half. It does make you selfish. The love of money is the root of all evil. But, in your defence, the universal health care the neo liberals have in mind would cause more harm than good. You can be both generous and pragmatic.

Yes, you're selfish.
....and that guy that thinks Canada's air travel tax is the result of Health Care needs to check his facts a little more closely.
